British Values

Fundamental British Values at Pirton School

In accordance with The Department for Education, we aim to actively promote British values in our school to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.

The Key British Values are:

  • democracy
  • rule of law
  • individual liberty
  • mutual respect
  • tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Democracy

One of our learning behaviours is “Respect” and democracy is richly embedded within the school. Pupils have the opportunity to have their voices heard through our School Council, and our wide range of pupil groups and pupil voice interviews. Representatives in pupil groups such as school council and eco warriors are elected.

The Rule of Law

One of our 6 learning behaviours is ‘Responsibility’. The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout the school day, as well as when reflecting on and considering the impact of our behaviour on others in collective worship. We have three clear, succint and shared school rules which are embedded across the school. Children are taught the value and reasons behind laws and rules, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.

Individual Liberty

One of our three school rules is “Be Safe” and pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Children in our Reception class are encouraged to make choices and engage in risky play. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advise how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons.

Mutual Respect

One of our three school rules is “Be Kind” Our school ethos revolves around our care and commitment to all members of the school community. Everybody matters. Posters and displays around the school promote respect for others and this is reiterated in the classroom, as well as our behaviour policy.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

One of our learning behaviours is “Respect”. We teach pupils tolerance through enhancing pupils understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity. Assemblies and discussions involving prejudices and prejudice-based bullying are followed up and supported by learning in RE and PSHE. Members of different faiths or religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school.
