Growing And Changing

We began our new big idea this week with a trip to Millgreen Museum and Watermill.  The focus of our visit was to learn about how plants, particularly wheat, grow and how it is changed into flour and then the flour is changed into bread.

The children wholeheartedly engaged in four workshops, we made paper flowers and learnt that we need flowers to attract bees and that we need bees to help plants grow, including wheat.  We also learnt about how grain is milled into flour and saw the waterwheel and millstones at work.   We played with gears sets and grain, then we had a go at milling our own grain, it was hard work!  We loved dressing in baker’s aprons and hats then using flour from the mill to make bread.

We were so proud of how well the children behaved on the trip, they showed respect and resilience.  It was also lots of fun and we are looking forward to our next trip to Standalone Farm.

We continued to learn about growing and changing by listening to the traditional tale The Little Red Hen.  We had an interesting discussion about whether she should share the bread with the other animals.

In maths we have been focusing on shape and how shapes can be combined to make pictures and models.  We have also continued to practise doubles and number bonds to ten.

On Friday we had a go at the three different types of races that will be in sports day, the sprint, sack race and egg and spoon race.  The children all showed positivity, resilience and kindness to their friends.  Just a reminder, Sports Day will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday 3rd July, with the reserve date being Thursday 4th July.
