On Remembrance Day, Owls class enjoyed an assembly with Mrs Fryer and respectfully observed a minute’s silence in the morning, then in the afternoon, we had a ‘virtual visit’ to London Museum at Docklands for a live lesson about the Blitz in WW2.
We were fascinated to learn about the Hook family, particularly as – by coincidence – the youngest children from the family were evacuated to Hitchin in 1940. We were told – from first person accounts and stories that have been passed down to relatives – that Olive and Stan Hook worked for the AFS (Auxiliary Fire Service), that the older children volunteered when they were old enough to help with the war effort and that the Hook family home was destroyed by a V2 bomb. We also learned about why Docklands was so heavily bombed and the effect on rationing. It was a very interesting lesson, which made us some of what people went through during WW2 and made us excited to be learning about Britain at War in the summer term.
