Welcome to Owls!
Owls are taught by Mrs Allison Shaw from Monday to Thursday lunchtime with TA support from Mrs Paula Manson. On Thursday afternoons Mrs. Shaw has her PPA (Planning, Preparation and Assessment) time. The class is taught by Mrs Suki Barhey and Mrs Jenn Magdeburg across Thursday afternoon and Friday. We are a Year 6 class with 21 children.
This is Year 6’s SATs year but while we are all going to work hard together to help them to achieve the best results they possibly can, we are going to have lots of fun along the way!
During the Autumn Term we will learn about how the heart works, how to keep ourselves healthy and how to make bread. We will read the fantastic book Freedom by Catherine Johnson to enhance our topic Maafa, in which we will learn about Africa and the terrible transatlantic slave trade. We will build on our colour mixing and landscape painting skills from last year and learn about some significant ‘trail blazing’ black artists.
In English, we will be using some fantastic fiction and non-fiction texts to develop reading and writing skills. We will also do plenty of regular spelling, grammar and punctuation practice with regular SATs-style questions in both Maths and English to help children to feel familiar and confident with these.
Please support your child at home with reading, spellings, times tables and home learning so that they can make the best possible progress in all areas of the curriculum.
We have lots of workshops planned for this year and are in the process of deciding on and booking some exciting trips.
We are looking forward to an exciting term ahead.
